Project Overview
Because of its significance and its historic designation, all work must meet the secretary of the interior’s standards for the treatment of historic properties. The clock tower is a timber structure clad in wood, with sheet metal covering all horizontal surfaces and some vertical surfaces have been as well. Some of the early sheet metal still on vertical surfaces has been artistically rusticated to simulate stone coursing. Free standing corinthian columns decorate the lower (bell) level of the tower; while the upper level has more slender free ionic columns. There is a large clock face at each of the four sides of the tower and the clock works still keeps accurate time. An approximately six foot high, metal statue of lady justice stands at the very top of the tower - she is a replica of the original, which today is housed nearby in the seige museum.
This clock tower currently has sustained a high level of deterioration both in it’s structural members and decorative embellishments. The intent of this project is, where possible, to reinforce and repair deteriorated elements and, where not possible to repair them, to replicate and replace them; and to install better waterproofing flashing details, in order to extend the life of this important historic structure.
